A-Levels Typical Day

Typical Day: A-Levels

List of 5 items.

  • 7:30am - 8:15am: Unstructured Drop-Off

A typical day for a Herberger Young Scholars Academy Middle Years student begins any time between 7:30am and 8:15am.

The school doors open for students at 7:30am, and students are able to enter the building and wait for school to begin at 8:15am in a relaxed, supervised environment. During this time, there are unstructured opportunities for students to take advantage of quiet spaces for work or personal interests, play on the piano, work in the DesignLab, socialize, or seek assistance from teachers. A small number of clubs may meet during this time, as well.
  • 8:15am - 11:05am: Classes

At 8:15am, the school day begins. A-Level students engage with their main subject classes during the morning and early afternoon. These may include Cambridge classes such as science, history, Global Perspectives, and language arts, as well as classes taken through Arizona State University or other outside partners.
  • 11:10am - 12:00pm: Lunch

At 11:10am, the entire school pauses for an hour to eat lunch together at the Verde Dining Pavilion on the ASU West Campus. Communal lunch provides an opportunity for students to socialize, including with friends in other Cohorts. Lunch is from 11:10am until 12:00pm, allowing students ample time to eat and talk, as well as the opportunity to partake in unstructured supervised play on the Sun Devil Fitness Center Lawn.

Depending on courses they select, A-Level students may have class during this time.
  • 12:00pm - 3:15pm Non-Cohort Classes

Afternoons for A-Levels typically include at least one required Herberger Young Scholars Academy class, generally directly after lunch, with the remainder of the afternoon available for scheduling mentorships/internships, advanced language, math, other outside classes, or participating in the in-house elective offerings.
  • 3:15pm - 4:30pm Clubs/Sports

The academic day at Herberger Young Scholars Academy officially ends at 3:15pm. All academic classes are released at this time, and students are free to check out and depart school. Most students will be picked up by a parent or guardian in a car, some take the ASU intercampus shuttle or public transportation,  ride their bike or walk home, while some A-Levels drive themselves.

Herberger Young Scholars Academy Clubs and Sports teams meet from 3:15pm to 4:30pm, and every effort is made to schedule athletic contests during this time.

In addition, we recognize that schedules may create conflict, so Herberger Young Scholars Academy offers after-school supervision for students who are not able to depart right at 3:15pm and are not part of an afterschool club or sport.

After-school supervision ends at 4:30pm, as do sports and clubs, and all students depart school at that time, when the school officially closes for the day.
