Application Process


Herberger Young Scholars Academy utilizes admissions deadlines for applicants applying to the next academic year, while still offering rolling admissions for applicants applying for a vacant position during the current academic year.

Applications will only be considered for the current and next academic years.

Applications for the next academic year are not accepted before September 1st.

Application Deadlines:
15 Jan:  Regular Admissions Application Deadline
15 Mar: Late Admissions Application Deadline

The following items are required to be submitted prior to the admissions deadline to be considered during the Spring admissions reviews: 

  • Completed application
  • Application fee
  • WISC-V testing (and summary) 
  • Report cards and/or transcripts
  • Standardized/State test results 
  • Recommendations

Any completed application received after the Late Application Deadline (March 15th) but before the September 1st threshold will be considered on a rolling basis for the current application cycle. 

Applications received on or after September 1st will be considered for the following academic year. Depending on current student enrollment, applicants applying on or after September 1st, but before November 15th may request consideration for both the current and following academic years.

Admissions Requirements

List of 2 items.

  • Must be 11 years old by the first day of fall semester classes for the academic year you are applying

  • Completed 6th grade curriculum

An Ideal Candidate

List of 7 items.

  • Educational needs not being met in current school

  • Highly independent and self-disciplined

  • Works well collaboratively and independently

  • Works well in a fluid environment

  • Is ready for academic acceleration

  • Consistently performs at the highest levels on achievement tests

  • Intellectual ability significantly higher than age peers with a score above 130 on an IQ test (WISC V) within last 3 years

Steps to becoming a Herberger Young Scholar

Admission to the Gary K. Herberger Young Scholars Academy is a 4/5 step process

Once all required steps are completed, your student's application will be reviewed during the next admissions board meeting. Student applications will be evaluated and ranked against all candidate applications during the same admissions cycle.
