IGCSE Typical Day

Typical Day: IGCSE

List of 5 items.

  • 7:30am - 8:15am: Unstructured Drop-Off

A typical day for a Herberger Young Scholars Academy IGCSE student begins any time between 7:30am and 8:15am.

The school doors open for students at 7:30am, and students are able to enter the building and wait for school to begin at 8:15am in a relaxed, supervised environment. During this time, there are unstructured opportunities for students to take advantage of quiet spaces for work or personal interests, play on the piano, work in the DesignLab, socialize, or seek assistance from teachers. A small number of clubs may meet during this time, as well.
  • 8:15am - 11:05am: Core

At 8:15am, the school day begins in the IGCSE Classrooms. IGCSE students engage in their Core Course in distinct cohorts identified by their progress through the IGCSE program (either IGCSE1 or IGCSE2). These cohorts generally begin the day meeting in their discrete grouping, though they frequently mix together either as a single large unit, or intermixed between the two cohorts. These may be multidisciplinary lessons that may span the entire block (including using the ASU laboratories for science labs, Fletcher Library, or local on or off campus field trips), or a series of interconnected lessons that build upon or radiate from each other.

IGCSE teachers plan numerous opportunities for out of seat learning as well as breaks from learning.
  • 11:10am - 12:00pm: Lunch

At 11:10am, the entire school pauses for an hour to eat lunch together at the Verde Dining Pavilion on the ASU West Campus. Communal lunch provides an opportunity for IGCSE students to socialize, including with friends in other Cohorts. Lunch is from 11:10am until 12:00pm, allowing IGCSE students ample time to eat and talk, as well as the opportunity to partake in unstructured supervised play on the Sun Devil Fitness Center Lawn.

Following lunch, IGCSE students return to the Herberger Young Scholars Academy building with the whole school and partake in afternoon classes.
  • 12:00pm - 3:15pm Non-Cohort Classes

Afternoon classes are not cohort based, but rather are ability based or are electives. The afternoon is divided into 3 learning periods. During this time, students will partake in an ability based math class, an ability based language class, and an elective of their choosing. Math and language classes meet 5 days a week, while electives take place on either a Monday/Tuesday/Thursday schedule, or a Wednesday/Friday schedule. This means that in a 5 day week, students take 4 afternoon classes; math, language, and 2 electives.
  • 3:15pm - 4:30pm Clubs/Sports

The academic day at Herberger Young Scholars Academy officially ends at 3:15pm. All academic classes are released at this time, and students are free to check out and depart school. Most students will be picked up by a parent or guardian in a car, some take the ASU intercampus shuttle or public transportation, and still others ride their bike or walk home.

Herberger Young Scholars Academy Clubs and Sports teams meet from 3:15pm to 4:30pm, and every effort is made to schedule athletic contests during this time.

In addition, we recognize that schedules may create conflict, so Herberger Young Scholars Academy offers after-school supervision for students who are not able to depart right at 3:15pm and are not part of an afterschool club or sport.

After-school supervision ends at 4:30pm, as do sports and clubs, and all students are picked up or depart school at that time, when the school officially closes for the day.
